Working car meeting on the outdoor area of the transport museum
In-house construction of the light rail central workshop
The electric locomotive no. 2016 was built by the Stadtbahnzentralwerkstatt in Rödelheim. The vehicle, known as the “battery locomotive”, was put into service 35 years ago in the orange livery typical of work cars. The chassis came from an M car. The energy storage units enable operation in areas without overhead contact lines (e.g. new buildings) or when the traction current has to be switched off due to construction work, for example.
The “Historische Straßenbahn der Stadt Frankfurt am Main e. V.” (HSF) association is marking the birthday of the battery-powered locomotive by organizing a vehicle show on the outdoor grounds of the transport museum in Schwanheim. Visitors will be able to see the battery-powered locomotive (car number 2016), the freight streetcar (Pt car 749, built in 1978) and the so-called “SchneeschieBÄR” (Pt car 2050, built in 1972), the VGF snow plow, on November 17 from 11 am to 5 pm.
Parcel transportation by streetcar
The freight streetcar is VGF’s latest working vehicle, with which the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (UAS) has tested parcel transportation by streetcar in a pilot project. Ice cream van no. 2050, on the other hand, has long been established. VGF introduced it in response to the severe onset of winter in 2013, when the entire streetcar network was shut down for several days due to freezing rain. The pantograph applies glycol to the overhead line using a contact wire wetting system.
During opening hours, the East Hall of the Transport Museum can also be visited in addition to the outdoor area. As is well known, the west hall must remain closed. In addition, the historic MB O305 bus – which is ten years older and also a birthday boy – will be making its way to Schwanheim. The museum shop-on-tour also offers the perfect opportunity to do the first Christmas shopping of the season.
Shuttle service with historic streetcars
The event is optimally connected via a shuttle service with historic streetcars. From the zoo, the service runs every hour via Ostendstraße, Ignatz-Bubis-Brücke (formerly Obermainbrücke), Lokalbahnhof, Südbahnhof, Stresemannallee-/Gartenstraße and Niederrad Bahnhof to the Transport Museum. The M/m train (built in 1959, 102/1804) and the N railcar (built in 1963, 112) will probably be used. The timetable can be downloaded below.
