ABOUT THE TRANSPORT MUSEUM
The Frankfurt am Main Transport Museum is located in the Schwanheim district at the “Rheinlandstraße” terminus of streetcar line 12. The permanent exhibition “From the horse-drawn streetcar to modern times” offers a comprehensive insight into the 150-year history of Frankfurt’s local transport system and brings history back to life with its lovingly restored exhibits. On a tour covering almost 4,000 square meters through the two museum halls and the outdoor area, visitors are invited to discover, remember and experience.
The Frankfurt Transport Museum was opened on May 8, 1984 by the then Stadtwerke Frankfurt am Main, the predecessor company of today’s Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt(VGF). Since April 16, 2006, the museum has been run on a voluntary basis by the “Historische Straßenbahn der Stadt Frankfurt am Main e. V.”(HSF) association. Since then, the members of the association have been organizing regular events and expert guided tours and bringing the exhibition to life on Sundays and public holidays.
The now traditional events include the Easter Bunny Express, the Santa Claus Express, the summer festival and the Frankfurt Transport History Day, which is organized together with the other Frankfurt railroad associations. In addition to the events in the museum, HSF and VGF also organize numerous special trips on various occasions, such as the Night of the Museums and the Luminale every two years.
The Frankfurt Transport Museum also includes the light rail exhibition in the Kirchplatz subway station in the Bockenheim district. However, this can only be opened to the public on an irregular basis. It was first opened at its new location on October 4 and 5, 2008 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Frankfurt subway. We will inform you about the next opening days of the light rail exhibition as soon as possible under News. The reopening after a renovation and complete overhaul is expected to take place in October 2022.
