Shuttle service with historic streetcars between the zoo and Offenbach city limits
On September 5, 1970, Stadtwerke Frankfurt am Main put a new track system in Heisterstrasse and Seehofstrasse in the Sachsenhausen district into operation. This is the “spacious station facility with 5 platforms and 3 tracks in between” of the local station, as reported in the operating magazine of the time. Previously, trains coming from Dreieichstraße crossed Darmstädter Landstraße, passed under the railroad tracks and turned left into Offenbacher Landstraße. Lines 4, 9, 11 and 16 served the new route when it opened.
The association “Historische Straßenbahn der Stadt Frankfurt am Main e. V.” (HSF) is organizing a shuttle service with historic streetcars between Frankfurt Zoo and the Offenbach city limits to mark the 55th anniversary of the streetcar to Heister-/Seehofstraße. The vintage trams will cross the Ignatz Bubis Bridge (formerly the Obermain Bridge) every half hour, reach the Lokalbahnhof stop built in 1970, turn into Heisterstrasse and then Seehofstrasse and continue their journey along Offenbacher Landstrasse. Two streetcars of the O (built in 1969) and Pt (built in 1977/78) series are expected to be used.
The streetcars will follow the route of the special line 22 operated by the VGF from one day after the special trip and are also marked as such in the timetable. It will serve as a replacement for line 15, which normally runs to Offenbach for schoolchildren, when it has to be diverted due to construction work in Textorstraße. However, there is no connection between this closure and the special trip one day before the start of the project.
