Travel to the Historical Museum’s mobility exhibition with vintage light rail vehicles
On May 31, 1980, what is now Frankfurt’s busiest light rail line, the “U4”, was officially opened. As a pure tunnel line, it connected the main station with Seckbacher Landstraße and stopped under the Römer, Konstablerwache and Berger Straße, among others. 27 U3 vehicles were purchased especially for the new subway line. Unlike on the A line, the tight construction conditions of the “Bornheimer Zeil” forced the use of a tunnel boring machine. A total of four new underground stations were built.
The “Historische Straßenbahn der Stadt Frankfurt am Main e.V.” (HSF) association is organizing a shuttle service with historic streetcars between Bockenheimer Warte and Schäfflestraße in the Riederwald district to mark the 45th anniversary of the U4 line. The old-timers pass under the main station, Römer, Konstablerwache and, of course, Berger Straße every hour.
Passengers can not only board the anniversary train at the “Dom/Römer” station, which opened in 1974. The nearby Historical Museum Frankfurt (HMF) is hosting a special exhibition entitled ” Get moving! Frankfurt and mobility “. Transport archaeology, urban development and also aesthetic aspects of mobility are in the foreground. The exhibition, housed in the exhibition building (level 0) of the Historical Museum, is open until September 14.

All you need to travel on the historic trains is an RMV ticket valid for Frankfurt or the Germany ticket is required. The vehicles are not barrier-free and do not have a designated parking area for bicycles. To avoid blocked escape routes, which could save lives in an emergency, bicycles are not permitted on board the historic vehicles.
There may be operational deviations from the route as well as from the timetable and vehicle deployment!
